To treat your home, your cooperation is essential. Heat treatment requires the movement of air using industrial fans; therefore, to prepare for our team to do their best for you, please read and carry out the following instructions before we arrive. This will help your pest control technician to better and efficiently treat your residence.
Failure to prepare properly may result in an unsuccessful treatment and/or added costs for preparation or cancellation.
Furniture
You can leave your furniture in your home.
- Move everything in your home about 2 feet away from the walls to allow access to the entire perimeter. This includes closets.
- Beds – place mattresses upright at least one foot off of the floor, they require complete air movement around them.
Items that must be removed or protected
- Household plants & Pets – including fish in aquariums
- Fresh food, fruits, vegetables, etc. (unless in fridge/freezer)
- Garbage containers and pet litter boxes must be emptied
- Beverages – bottles of wine and carbonated beverages
- Food that melts – chocolate and other foodstuffs and candy
- Prescriptions and over the counter medications
- Make-up – Especially lipstick (wax based)
- Wax based items – Candles, wax figurines, wax fruit, oil paintings
- All aerosol and pressurized cans – Hairspray, deodorants, bug sprays, asthma inhalers, spray paint, cleaning products, fire extinguishers, oxygen bottles, etc.
- Flammables, lighters, lamp fuel, alcohol, butane lighters, lamp fuel, solvents, fuel for food warmers, ammunition, etc.
- Wooden stringed musical instruments – leave the cases
- Family heirlooms and irreplaceable items should be inspected and a determination made as to whether they should be treated.
- Laminated & shrink wrapped cabinets, millwork, countertops, flooring, furniture, etc. can be damaged by heat. These are usually manufactured wood or plastic products with a finish bonded with glue mastic that can separate when heated. If this happens the finish material can be pressed back on upon cooling and held in place with tape until they re-stick. If possible, make arrangements to have these items removed from your home during the heat treatment.
Please note: Smaller items can be stored in the refrigerator/freezer during the treatment. Don’t take larger items out of the house, leave them for inspection by the door labelled “DO NOT HEAT”. It will be determined if any of these items need to be treated.
Clothing
- Clothing in drawers can be left in drawers unless they are densely packed. If clothing in drawers are densely packed, remove them and place them LOOSELY in open-weave laundry baskets. DO NOT place clothing in plastic bags.
- Clothing can remain in the closet if there is some space between articles of clothing to allow the heat treatment to penetrate. Whether hanging or on shelves, just make sure there is ample spacing for air movement.
- Washing using the hottest water cycle and drying using the hottest and longest setting will treat most clothing. Avoid contaminating the freshly washed clothing. Do not return the clean clothing to the container (bag, basket, etc.) it was transported in unless that container is treated.
- To avoid re-introducing bed bugs, clothing that has been removed from the home should be washed, then dried at highest temperatures for a minimum of 90 minutes.
Larger items – linens, towels, blankets, etc.
- Place these items in open weave laundry baskets. Pack the items loosely to allow for air circulation. Do not pack into plastic bags. If you have a lot of blankets etc. run a clothes line/rope in the basement attached to the ceiling and hang those items on it.
- Plastic storage boxes/compartments. If these have not been opened since before the infestation then leave them closed. If not – the items inside must be heat treated. Do not leave big piles of clothing, toys, books, etc. that air cannot move about freely.
- Clothing on hangers in closets are allowable.
- Excess clothing must be hung on a rope type of close line . The clothing can be piled on the line.
- Papers, smaller items, knick-knacks and collectibles

- Glass items, knick-knacks and other collectibles will need to be secured. Do not leave breakable items on shelves or other areas where wind damage could happen.

Electronics, television, computers, video players, stereos, etc.
- Switch all electronic appliances to the off position.
- Remove Vinyl records. CDs & DVDs need to be properly stored or damage may occur. Computers, TVs, game consoles, etc. are usually in infestation areas so heat treatment is advised/required. Check with the manufacturer about temperature limits and remove if necessary. Remove batteries from laptops & other devices.
- Disconnect all electric appliances by unplugging from the wall outlet.
Water beds and air beds
- Water beds will need to be drained. If the water bed is not drained it will prevent the frame from reaching lethal temperatures.
- Air beds will need to be deflated to avoid damage.

AFTER YOUR HEAT TREATMENT SERVICE
Re-contamination is not the responsibility of CAN HEAT.
All persons and items impose great risk of bringing pests back into your home. Extreme caution must be taken all home occupants and is everyone’s responsibility.
It should be considered who visits or stays at the property. To reduce the risk of re-contamination returning, persons should have a change of clean laundered clothing. It is realized that children travel to many homes and pose a high risk for transferring pests between homes.
The dryer lint screen should be checked for the detection of pests load by load. Inspection of beds and linens when and after visitors come and leave will aid in early detection.
If the home occupant is not concerned or does not protect the dwelling from visitors; and, does not report others who have pest issues, you will be responsible for the cost of repeat heat treatments. We work very close with housing management to make people’s life better; but, we need community support as well to rid your home of pests.
Your home will be very warm when you return. You may notice some things out of place as we have moved things to distribute the heat treatment evenly for the best outcome. Once we are finished, you may open windows, turn on air conditioning or fans, and move your things back to where they belong. Allow electronics to cool prior to using( ie TV’s, computers, gaming equipment.
Extreme caution should be taken when getting furniture new or used. Check it over thoroughly. Used or secondhand clothing should be laundered immediately, be cautious about storing other people’s items or bags of clothes. A second thought should be given to lending or borrowing items or even a jacket if your not sure.
Thanks for taking the time to review these documents. We welcome your feed back. Please let your housing dept and Can Heat know how we did for you.
